Action Printers, a longstanding business operating for over 30 years in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, has entered a new chapter under the ownership of Ryan and Jana Johnson. The couple has transitioned the business to operate as International Minute Press, part of the Minuteman Press International franchise network. The business remains at its original location: 300 E. Harrison Avenue, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
Business Transition and Growth
Ryan and Jana Johnson acquired Action Printers through Minuteman Press International’s conversion program, designed to connect sellers with prospective buyers. Although Ryan lacked prior experience in the printing industry, he brings extensive knowledge from his background in economics and business strategy. He previously taught at the University of Arizona Eller College of Management.
Ryan underscores the importance of community involvement in his new role, saying, “Building relationships is the core of our business. Whether or not we secure new business is secondary to establishing meaningful connections within the community.”
As he integrates into Coeur d’Alene, Ryan is eager to educate clients on the diverse capabilities of the printing industry. “I love our slogan, ‘We Design, Print & Promote…You!’ It emphasizes the versatility of our services, from mass mailers to promotional products and apparel. We can design and print anything to support the growth of local businesses,” he explains.
Transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship, Ryan appreciates the flexibility and new challenges that come with owning a business. “While my previous job allowed me to set my schedule, being a business owner offers similar flexibility but adds an exciting adventure and the opportunity to develop new skills,” he adds.
Choosing Franchising
When asked why he chose to franchise with Minuteman Press International, Ryan highlights the entrepreneurial freedom the franchise offers. “Minuteman Press International is unique compared to other franchises where most details are predetermined. Each shop I visited was slightly different, allowing for personalized business approaches. This appealed to my desire to build community relationships and help other businesses succeed,” he says.
The acquisition process was supported by local RVP Chris Jutt, whose guidance was instrumental. “Chris provided invaluable knowledge and support throughout the process and continues to be a mentor. The local field team, including Jayson and Alonso, has been fantastic in teaching us the industry’s intricacies. The MPI team is always available for support,” Ryan notes.
Ryan’s advice to aspiring business owners is to strive for excellence, “Don’t let good be the enemy of great.”
Supporting the Community
Ryan’s approach to business is heavily focused on community engagement. “One of my primary goals in buying this business is to become an integral part of the community. I keep this in mind as I make marketing calls and network. It’s all about connecting with people in a meaningful way,” he emphasizes.
Ryan’s background in education plays a pivotal role in his approach. “My experience teaching economics and business strategy has equipped me with a solid foundation for running a business. The skills I’ve developed in academia are highly transferable and beneficial in this new venture,” he says.
Expanding Services and Innovation
Under Ryan and Jana’s leadership, International Minute Press in Coeur d’Alene aims to expand its service offerings and innovate within the industry. “We are excited to bring new ideas and services to our clients. From innovative design concepts to advanced printing techniques, we are committed to offering top-notch solutions to meet the evolving needs of businesses,” Ryan shares.
Ryan and Jana are particularly excited about the potential for growth in promotional products and apparel. “These are areas where we see significant demand. Our goal is to provide comprehensive solutions that go beyond traditional printing services,” Ryan explains.
Looking Forward
Ryan and Jana’s journey with International Minute Press is just beginning, but they are optimistic about the future. “Owning a business is a continuous learning experience. We are grateful for the support of Minuteman Press International and the local community as we navigate this new venture,” Ryan says.
